Vanilla Cupcake Ghosts – A Simple and Fun Family Recipe

Jump to Recipe

I first tried the idea of cake ghosts last year and created them using a cake pop method. This year I thought I’d go for something a little simpler, ‘Vanilla Cupcake Ghosts’. This method means that you could either make all the elements from scratch or purchase them ready-made for ghost construction.

When it comes to Halloween, my son is currently a huge fan. The earlier the celebrations start, the better (in his eyes).

This recipe is one for the whole family. You could even decorate one each and individualise them. The ingredients are simple and can be picked up at local Supermarkets such as Asda, Tesco or Aldi.

If you’d like to make the cupcakes and buttercream from this recipe, you’ll find the links below. I’ve used a quarter of each (3 cupcakes and 150g of buttercream).

  • Roll out the fondant some more until it's nice and thin. Don't worry about keeping the circle shape, it will add to the effect.

  • Cover the cupcake with the fondant. Shape it to the cupcake if needed and add 2 googly eyes.

Variations of Vanilla Cupcake Ghosts

Why not vary the Vanilla Cupcake Ghosts recipe with the ideas below:

  • Use peanut butter buttercream so you can create a PB&J cupcake ghost
  • Use chocolate chips for the eyes
  • Try a different fondant colour for a bright effect
  • Put your vanilla cupcake ghost on top of a larger cake as a ‘cake topper’
  • Use writing icing to add extra decoration to the ghost, such as a mouth or hair
